A plate is made and the ink is pressed into the paper leaving an impression (also called debossing).

Letterpress

Paper is pressed between two engraved plates creating a design that is raised on the paper. Typically no ink is used.

Classic Emboss

Similar to a classic emboss in that the design is raised on the paper, however it uses multi-level and contoured impressions to give a three-dimensional appearance. So it is more detailed and provides more depth and texture.

Sculpted Emboss

No impression is made into the paper - the ink sits on top (pretty much like printing on a home computer).

Flat / Digital Printing

Like letterpress, but instead of ink being pressed into the paper, foil is stamped into the paper using heat creating an impression.

Foil Stamping

Refers to stamps no longer in circulation by the post office. So even a stamp from last year that is no longer being sold by the USPS is considered “vintage”. Vintage stamps typically cost 5-7 times the face value.

Vintage Postage

A shape other than square or rectangle.
